The old cat 老猫
An old woman had a cat. The cat was very old; she could not run quickly, and she could not bite, because she was so old. One day the old cat saw a mouse; she jumped and caught the mouse. But she could not bite it; so the mouse got out of her mouth and ran away, because the cat could not bite it.
Then the old woman became very angry because the cat had not killed the mouse. She began to hit the cat. The cat said, "Do not hit your old servant. I have worked for you for many years, and I would work for you still, but I am too old. Do not be unkind to the old, but remember what good work the old did when they were young."

King ALFRED O f England once led his army to fight with another army and was beaten. So he had to run away through the woods and swamps to save his life.

He was ragged and dirty and she did not know that he was the king. She felt so sorry for him that she told him to come in and gave hem a seat near the fire.
She was baking some cakes. She said to King Alfred, “ I must go and milk the cow. Watch the cakes and do not let them burn. “ The king was willing to do this, but he kept thinking about his army and soon forgot all about the cakes. In a few minutes the woman came back and found the cakes burning. She was so angry that she struck the king with a stick and cried, “ You lazy fellow! You want to eat, but you do not want to work.”

In the Warring States Period, a man in the State of Chu was offering a sacrifice to his ancestors. After the ceremony, the man gave a beaker of wine to his servants. The servants thought that there was not enough wine for all them, and decided to each draw a picture of a snake; the one who finished the picture first would get the wine. A mouse once took a bite out of a bull's tail as he lay dozing. The bull jumped up in a rage and, with his head low to the ground, chased the mouse right across the yard. The mouse was too quick for him, however, and slipped easily into a hole in the wall.
The bull charged the wall furiously again and again, but although he bruised his head and chipped his horns, the mouse stayed safely inside his hole. After a time the bull gave up and sank down to rest again.
As soon as the bull was asleep, the little mouse crept to the mouth of the hole, pattered across the yard, bit the bull again -- this time on the nose -- and rushed back to safety. As the bull roared helplessly the mouse squeaked:

"There she is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent. And some day Im gonna give you one just like it . . . then you can see for yourself all the pretty things in the Christmas windows that Ive been trying to tell you about."

Matt and his wife lived in the country. Matt was very stingy(吝啬) and hated spending money. One day a fair(集市) came to the nearby town.

Matt thought about this for a while. He knew he would have to spend money at the fair. At last he said, “All right, but I’m not going to spend much money. We’ll look at things, but we won’t buy anything.”

赏析：夸张是指借助艺术想象,以现实生活为基础,抓住描写对象的某些特征加以夸张,以突出事物本质.夸张的修辞手法往往能造成幽默的效果.这种修辞手法在我国的相声段子里面非常普遍,在外国的幽默故事中也随处可见.
这则幽默就是用夸张的手法讽刺了一位极其吝啬的男人.吝啬鬼在世界文学作品中并不少见,中国古有多点了一根灯草就不能安然死去的严监生,外国有临死前瞪着发金光的眼睛想夺取金色十字架的葛朗台.
吝啬是落后的生活方式、不健康的封建思想在人脑海中的根深蒂固.它不独存在于哪个制度,哪个社会.即便在享受现代物质文明----乘飞机旅行的今天,我们的主人公麦栋夫妇,为了那可怜的10美元,也会置生命安全于不顾,“宁死不叫”.他们的这种小气跟他们所享受的现代文明形成了极大的一个反差.
作者在文章的最后运用了夸张的修辞手法“it wasn’t easy for her , you know ,especially when she fell out”.一切显得那样的不尽情理,一切又似乎是那样的合情合理：一旦一个社会的精神文明不能赶上他的物质文明时,就有可能会产生一些变态的东西.

从前,有两只老鼠,它们是好朋友.一只老鼠居住在乡村,另一只住在城里.很多年以后,乡下老鼠碰到城里老鼠,它说：“你一定要来我乡下的家看看.”于是,城里老鼠就去了.乡下老鼠领着它到了一块田地上它自己的家里.它把所有最精美食物都找出来给城里老鼠.城里老鼠说：“这东西不好吃,你的家也不好,你为什么住在田野的地洞里呢?你应该搬到城里去住,你能住上用石头造的漂亮房子,还会吃上美味佳肴,你应该到我城里的家看看.”
乡下老鼠就到城里老鼠的家去.房子十分漂亮,好吃的东西也为他们摆好了.可是正当他们要开始吃的时候,听见很大的一阵响声,城里的老鼠叫喊起来：“快跑!快跑!猫来了!”他们飞快地跑开躲藏起来.
过了一会儿,他们出来了.当他们出来时,乡下老鼠说：“我不喜欢住在城里,我喜欢住在田野我的洞里.因为这样虽然贫穷但是快乐自在,比起虽然富有却要过着提心吊胆的生活来说,要好些.”
