美国民众于2011年9月17日发起了名为“占领华尔街（Occupy Wall Street）”的和平示威活动,号召2万人在9月17日占领华尔街,通过和平静坐等形式,声讨华尔街金融业者.此次示威活动由加拿大非营利杂志《Adbusters》（广告克星 the Vancouver-based counter-culture magazine Adbusters）于2011年7月发起倡议,并被命名为“占领华尔街”,意在表达对金融制度偏袒权贵和富人的不满,声讨引发金融海啸的罪魁祸首. 之所以选择9月17日,是因为这天是美国宪法日. 该活动网站上称：“将占领行动维持数月”,“我们共同的特点是占总人口99%的普通大众,对于仅占总数1%的人贪婪和腐败,我们再也无法忍受.”,“创造就业而不要战争”. 一切军事斗争、政治斗争、经济斗争都是为了其辖区内臣民的生存权益,然而错误的、泛滥的资本政策早已将一国一地区军事斗争、政治斗争、经济斗争的硕果吞噬已尽!

2011年9月17日,上千名示(河蟹)威者聚集在美国纽约曼哈顿,试图占领华尔街,有人甚至带了帐篷,扬言要长期坚持下去.他们通过互联网组织起来,要把华尔街变成埃及的解放广场.示(河蟹)威组织者称,他们的意图是要反对美国政治的权钱交易、两党政争以及社会不公正.2011年10月8日,“占领华尔街”抗议活动呈现升级趋势,千余名示威者在首都华盛顿游(河蟹)行,如今已逐渐成为席卷全美的群众性社会运动.
