Near a bubbly soupy swamp in a forest of strange creatures,lives the ogre Shrek (voiced by Mike Meyers of Saturday Night Live and Austin Powers fame).Feared and hunted by townspeople (all "normal" humans),the large ugly green being with horns for ears has grown accustomed to his solitary life...until the day when ruler of the land,Lord Farquaad (voiced by John Lithgow),decides to administer an ethnic cleansing of sorts.Rounding up the strange fairy tale characters living amongst the people,he orders them to reside in a designated area--Shrek's peaceful swamp.
Amongst the throng of things like a wooden doll with a growing nose and an old woman with scads of children living in a shoe,is a wisecracking non-stop talking donkey (voiced by Eddie Murphy) who anxiously wants to accompany Shrek to Farquaad's castle and assist in convincing the ruler to let the creatures roam freely again.Reluctantly,Shrek agrees to take Donkey (as he is simply named) to see the prince.But Farquaad will only agree to restore the swamp to its original splendor if the twosome can deliver Princess Fiona (voiced by Cameron Diaz),who is imprisoned by a dragon in a far away castle.With purpose and haste,Shrek sets off on his quest with Donkey in tow.
This hybrid fairy tale contains enough irreverent humor to keep audiences--and parents--upright in their seats.Shrek is the type of guy who enjoys blowing flatulent bubbles in his swamp water,and Donkey--not surprisingly--resembles Eddie Murphy after he's been fitted with a crude humor muzzle.Then there's the princess.Let's just say she's not quite what you'd expect either.
Shrek does have its laughable moments,and strengthens its theme of racial tolerance in a humorous way.Yet the bathroom humor,double entendre sexual jokes (hopefully vague enough to pass by young children),occasional cartoon style violence,and handful of mild profanities (including a synonym for "donkey"),may leave some parents wondering if the good makes up for the bad and the ugly in this movie.

Shrek is a green ogre who lives in a swamp,but his king sends him on a mission which he must complete to get his own land back.
You only have to watch ten minutes of this film to realise that this is going to be a classic.Eddie Murphy being employed as a wisecracking donkey was a casting dream and plays well against the more plain Shrek,voiced by Mike Myers.
Ok the plot is old,new,borrowed and blue (all recaps and references to fairy tales),but I don't care.It is all so much good fun and better than that,the kind of thing that can be enjoyed by young and old,male or female.It is really a dream of movie and some brilliant pop tunes are employed that really work fantastically against the images.Real tear-to-the-eye stuff.
A real bliss-out of a movie and all parties should be congratulated for making it so great.A real DVD buyer,because it can be enjoyed over and over again.Bring on the follow up,I can't wait.

Shrek lives in an Ogre Swamp.The swamp,like any other swamp,is green and murky.The swamp contains small and big ponds of muddy water and also has geysers that squirt out mud.The swamp contains the living quarters of Shrek which consists of an outhouse and Shrek's house.The swamp is also a home to different kinds of species including the swamp slug that Shrek uses for his toothpaste.When he finds squatters where he lives,he agrees to the rescue of Princess Fiona to evict all the squatters.However,during the course of the mission,Shrek falls deeply in love with Fiona.
Donkey
Donkey is talkative,enjoys singing,idle chatter,which proves rather annoying to those around him.He also has a sweet tooth,and enjoys such foods as cake,waffles,Pepperidge Farm Goldfish Crackers,parfait and "upside-down coconut soufflé with mango chutney sauce." In a scene about Merlin's bonfire,Donkey's sweet tooth gets the best of him,for he sees only a fudge torte in the enchanted smoke.
Some of Donkey's foibles include acrophobia,colorblindness,hypochondria and cowardice.These,coupled with his impatience and short attention span,prove trying in emergencies.Furthermore,he is often naive and tactless,and even a bit dim (as in the third film,wherein he has children but doesn't understand how children are conceived).
Princess Fiona
Princess Fiona is initially portrayed as the archetypal princess from fairy tales,speaking formally in matters of courtship and presenting high expectations of how she is to be rescued,who is to rescue her,and so forth.Later,Princess Fiona's true self emerges,as she's really a very down-to-earth and independent woman who is a match for Shrek at burping and farting,is a loyal friend,and unlike princesses of fairy tales,an expert in hand-to-hand combat with knowledge of chinese martial arts.She also has very bad manners (she burps and farts),since she is an ogre.
When asked if Princess Fiona resembled her,Cameron Diaz remarked how she thought Fiona looked more like her sister than her.[citation needed] One report indicates Oprah Winfrey was the model for Princess Fiona.
Fiona,along with other characters from the series,has a MySpace page that was created to promote Shrek the Third.According to the page,she is 22 years old,which is 86 years younger than her husband Shrek (age 108).One theory for this may be that Fiona started out as a human and therefore ages normally,while Shrek,being an ogre from the start,ages differently.
