The Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 American,it tells the story of Andy Dufresne,a banker who is sentenced to life in Shawshank State Prison for the murder of his wife and her lover despite his claims of innocence.During his time at the prison,he befriends a fellow inmate,Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding,and finds himself protected by the guards after the warden begins using him in his money laundering operation.

In 1947,banker Andy Dufresne is convicted of murdering his wife and her lover and sentenced to two consecutive life sentences at the fictional Shawshank State Penitentiary in the state of Maine.Andy befriends contraband smuggler Ellis "Red" Redding,an inmate serving a life sentence.Red procures a rock hammer and later a large poster of Rita Hayworth for Andy.Working in the prison laundry,Andy is regularly assaulted by the "bull queer" gang "the Sisters" and their leader,Bogs.
In 1949,Andy overhears the brutal captain of the guards,Byron Hadley,complaining about being taxed on an inheritance and offers to help him legally shelter the money.After a vicious assault by the Sisters nearly kills Andy,Hadley beats Bogs severely.Bogs is sent to another prison and Andy is never attacked again.Warden Samuel Norton meets with Andy and reassigns him to the prison library to assist elderly inmate Brooks Hatlen.Andy's new job is a pretext for him to begin managing financial matters for the prison employees.As time passes,the warden begins using Andy to handle matters for a variety of people including guards from other prisons and the warden himself.Andy begins writing weekly letters to the state government for funds to improve the decaying library.
In 1954,Brooks is paroled,but cannot adjust to the outside world after fifty years in prison and hangs himself.Andy receives a library donation that includes a recording of The Marriage of Figaro.He plays an excerpt over the public address system,resulting in his receiving solitary confinement.After his release from solitary Andy explains that hope is what gets him through his time,a concept that Red dismisses.In 1963,Norton begins exploiting prison labor for public works,profiting by undercutting skilled labor costs and receiving kickbacks.He has Andy launder the money using the alias Randall Stephens.
In 1965,Tommy Williams is incarcerated for burglary.He joins Andy's and Red's circle of friends,and Andy helps him pass his G.E.D.exam.In 1966,Tommy reveals to Red and Andy that an inmate at another prison claimed responsibility for the murders Andy was convicted of,implying Andy's innocence.Andy approaches Warden Norton with this information,but the warden refuses to listen and sends Andy back to solitary when he mentions the money laundering.Norton then has Captain Hadley murder Tommy under the guise of an escape attempt.Andy refuses to continue the money laundering,but relents after Norton threatens to burn the library,remove Andy's protection from the guards,and move him out of his cell into worse conditions.Andy is released from solitary confinement and tells Red of his dream of living in Zihuatanejo,a Mexican coastal town.Red feels Andy is being unrealistic,but promises Andy that if he is ever released he will visit a specific hayfield near Buxton,Maine and retrieve a package Andy buried there.Red becomes worried about Andy's state of mind,especially when he learns Andy asked another inmate to supply him with six feet of rope.
The next day at roll call the guards find Andy's cell empty.An irate Warden Norton throws a rock at the poster of Raquel Welch hanging on the wall,and the rock tears through the poster.Removing the poster,the warden discovers a tunnel that Andy dug with his rock hammer over the previous two decades.The previous night,Andy escaped through the tunnel and used the prison's sewage pipe to reach freedom.Andy escapes with Norton's suit,shoes,and the ledger containing details of the money laundering.While guards search for him the following morning,Andy poses as Randall Stephens and visits several banks to withdraw the laundered money.Finally,he mails the ledger and evidence of the corruption and murders at Shawshank to a local newspaper.The police arrive at Shawshank and take Hadley into custody,while Norton commits suicide to avoid arrest.
After serving 40 years,Red is finally paroled.He struggles to adapt to life outside prison and fears he never will.Remembering his promise to Andy,he visits Buxton and finds a cache containing money and a letter asking him to come to Zihuatanejo.Red violates his parole and travels to Fort Hancock,Texas to cross the border to Mexico,admitting he finally feels hope.On a beach in Zihuatanejo he finds Andy,and the two friends are happily reunited.

THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION is a strong debut for director Frank Darabont,a screenwriter who sold the script on the provision that he could direct it.This isn't a Film For The Ages,but it is involving and engaging for the majority of its 150-minute running time.Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman are both fine as convicts who meet in Shawshank Prison in the late 40's and get to know each other as they do time together.The suspense mainly revolves around 1) whether Robbins will continue to survive prison life; and 2) whether he should be there at all.The script does a decent job of sustaining these elements and keeping the viewer in doubt.On the other hand,there are few moments in the story that,once they are revealed,are different than you might expect.For the most part,the satisfying option is usually chosen,the one that will make the audience happy.While this makes for an enjoyable immediate experience ,the side effect is that the lack of genuine surprise makes it less enduring than you'd like.On the whole though,aside from script weaknesses and implausibilities (more than a couple),the performances are uniformly strong,if a bit two-dimensional in spots,the period feel of the art direction is thorough yet understated,Thomas Newman's score nicely supports things and is emotional without being too overpowering or treacly.For a prison drama,the violence isn't played up particlarly,but this ain't FREE WILLY,either.For the curious,SHAWSHANK makes for a good night out,as the saying goes.If the concept doesn't grab you from the start,I don't know that it would win you over.Marginally Recommended.

:The story may sound simple,but the truth behind the words is remarkable.When I heard the name of the film first time,I considered the Shawshank to be a man’ name,but in face it is a jail——a hell in the world.Not only for the inhumanity of the jailors——they behaved brutally; but also for the jail gnawed at people’ heart by keeping them waiting and waiting as life passed.It seemed that only those utterly worthless people who gave up everything could survive.That’s where the story happened.
The part impressed me most is when Andy got out of the jai.He extended his arms in front of him in the heavy rain as if he were welcoming the fresh air and the freedom.At that moment,I saw the faith win the darkness,discharging light dazzling the eyes in the dark blue sky.Under the light,I could feel my recreant innermost being shivering as his voice said:“Remember,Hope is a good thing,maybe the best of things and no good thing ever dies!”
That’s why I like this film:it encourages people to fight to preserve the dignity of human beings,to appreciate the beauty of life,and the most important is to keep hope forever.He once that is born,that is die.Everyone is the same.The only difference is whether busy living or busy dying.The film tells me even a man can live once,but if he keeps faith,keeps hope and works his life right,then once is enough.The faith is the bird that feels the light when the dawn is still dark,the hope is the chief happiness that this world affords,and the life should be full of the singing of the bird and the happiness hope brings." During manual labor,Andy overhears Captain of the Guards Byron Hadley (Clancy Brown) complain about having to pay taxes on a forthcoming inheritance.Andy risks punishment by explaining to Hadley how to circumvent the taxes legally; Hadley accepts Andy's advice and rewards his friends with a brief respite and beer.Andy's accountancy expertise is soon sought by other guards at Shawshank and nearby prisons,and Andy is given a space to work on their financial matters under the pretense of maintaining the prison library alongside elderly inmate Brooks Hatlen (James Whitmore).Hadley delivers a brutal beating to inmate Bogs (Mark Rolston),leader of "The Sisters",after his gangs' attempt to sexually molest Andy puts Andy in the infirmary; Bogs is paralyzed while the remaining Sisters leave Andy alone.Andy is able to use his good will with the guards to help expand the library; when one donation to the library provides him with the opera The Marriage of Figaro,he plays it for all the inmates to hear,well-aware of the punishment of solitary confinement he will receive for the brief moment of bliss.
Warden Norton creates a scheme to use prison labor for public works,undercutting the cost of skilled labor and discretely receiving personal kickbacks for it.Norton has Andy launder the money under a false identity,in exchange for allowing Andy to keep his private cell and to continue maintaining the library.Brooks is soon freed on parole,but is unable to adjust to the outside,non-regimented world,and hangs himself; Andy dedicates the expanded library to Brooks.In 1965,Tommy Williams (Gil Bellows) is incarcerated into Shawshank on robbery charges.Tommy is brought into Andy and Red's circle of friends,and Andy assists Tommy into getting his GED.Tommy reveals that one of his old prison-mates,Elmo Blatch (Bill Bolender) had claimed to have committed the murders for which Andy was charged.Norton,fearing that Andy may expose his illegal activities if he were released,puts him into solitary confinement and has Tommy killed by Hadley,claiming he was an escapee.When Andy is finally released from solitary,Norton threatens to burn down the library if Andy does not continue to launder the money for him.
Shortly after,Andy informs Red his dream to live in Zihuatanejo,a Mexican-Pacific coastal town,and instructs Red,should he ever be freed,to visit a specific hayfield near Buxton,Maine to find something he had left there.The next day at roll call,Andy's cell is found empty.Norton,in anger,throws one of Andy's rocks at the poster of Welch; the rock tears through the poster,revealing a tunnel that Andy had dug with the rock hammer over the last two decades that allowed him to escape Shawshank,along with a set of civilian clothes,his chess set,and the books he had kept for Norton,having swapped them for fakes the night before.Andy uses his false identity to withdraw all of Norton's money from the bank,at the same time,sending the evidence to a local newspaper.On the day the story runs,the police converge on the prison; Hadley is arrested while Norton commits suicide.
When Red finally achieves parole after serving 40 years of his sentence,he finds himself in the same bagging job at a grocery store as Brooks,and living in the the same apartment where Brooks committed suicide.Red decides to follow Andy's advice and visits Buxton.In the hayfield where Andy specified,he finds a cache of money and a note left by Andy,reminding him of Zihuatanejo,Mexico.Red violates his parole and travels to Mexico; he eventually comes across Andy on the coast,and they happily reunite.
